The Inevitable

I’m a heavy sleeper. I usually sleep all throughout the night. There’s no need to get up to get a glass of water or use the restroom.

Usually.

Lately, I’ve been getting up and out of bed multiple times a night. Last night I went to the bathroom to take a piss 3 times. THREE!!! It’s so irritating.

But I don’t understand why. I don’t recall consuming a lot of fluids last night. (sigh) Maybe I should just accept the fact that I’m getting old.

Goodbye Kotex, hello Depends.

Hello, Grandma

I have this rule – Don’t go out and party when you have work the following morning.

It’s not that I’m not capable of functioning the next day, because I can.

It’s because my whole next day’s schedule gets kind of fucked up. I don’t walk the dogs in the morning or even bother going to the gym because I NEED every second of sleep I can get. And when I get home from work, do you think I want to do anything remotely productive? Usually not.

I have no problem going out for a beer or two. It’s when the “couple beers” turn into four, five, or six beers, plus a couple of shots because it’s too damned hard to turn down free alcohol.

Damn you, tequila. Damn you.

Needless to say, I’ve been breaking this rule of mine the last couple of weeks.

Sundays are fundays (which I just learned via Wikipedia was a Christian Video Game for the NES), and Tuesdays are … nothing, usually. But we ran into an old friend on Sunday, who invited us out last night.

Right after work I had a Margarita with co-workers. I’m not a fan of tequila. So why did I have one? Because I didn’t pay for it.

Cah-ching.

I then made the commute home, picked up the roomie, and met up with our friend. While waiting for everyone to get ready, more shots were consumed. Why? Because it’s cheaper than the bar.

I bought first round and was already pretty good at this point. But then second round came and and homeboy is handing me a beer and a tequila shot. Ugh, I hate tequila but drank it anyways. Why? That’s right – because I didn’t pay for it. Plus, that’d be rude to turn it down.

The night finally ended and I scarfed down some grub when we got home because that’s what drunk people do.

Waking up was the worst. I managed to get up and move my car (to avoid a 3rd parking ticket in the last 2 weeks) and get my ass in the shower. However, after my shower I climbed my ass back into bed and only got out when my carpool buddy texted me that she was on her way.

There was really no point of this story besides the fact that I make rules for myself that I cannot keep.

And I mostly get myself in trouble because I am a cheap bastard and can never, ever turn down free alcohol.

And that I feel like a grandma because there were a few points in my life when I partied 5 times a week AND made it to work by 6am the next day. Ok, 6-ish.

1 and 2 and 3 and 4

At my last job, I worked in the Receiving department of a major retail store. It was a pretty physical job. I was on my feet all day unloading trucks, lifting boxes, driving the forklift, etc. My eating habits at the time were shitty. I didn’t know how to cook anything and I had no desire to learn. I only wanted what was convenient. I consumed a lot of Taco Bell, Alberto’s, and Pho. It didn’t affect me all that much physically because I stayed active at my job.

Last February, I was blessed with a new career opportunity. I was finally going to be doing something in the field I wanted to be in – computers. Unfortunately, this meant that I would be sitting down at a desk for 9 hours at work. And because I like to mess around with CSS and Photoshop and all that good stuff in my free time, this was 9 hours on top of the time I already spent plopped on my ass.

Trust me, I wasn’t complaining. It was great. It IS great. But the problem is the lack of any physical activity. Sure, I’ve become more conscience about my food consumption. I don’t eat a lot of sugar. Even though I love pasta, I try to stay away from it. I often choose vodka over beer. But none of that matters unless you’re doing something besides sitting on your ass for the majority of your life.

Here I am, almost a year later, and I think it’s finally catching up to me. I feel the unhealthiest I’ve ever felt my entire life. And it’s making me feel . . . old.

Hell naw. I’m not having that.

So I’m trying to work the gym into my daily routine. This is hard as fuck considering work keeps me away from home from 8am to 8pm. This is also difficult when you’re part of a large group of friends who have birthdays and birthday dinners and all that.

I have two choices:

  1. Work out early before work
  2. Work out late after work, or even later after all social obligations

I’m not a morning person, so I tried gymmin‘ it at 11pm one night.

Yeah, that happened ONE night. It’s hard to be motivated to go the gym when you’ve had a long day and knowing your comfy bed is in your room, calling you.

Morning it is!

I’m not the best at keeping commitments. I have a hard time remembering to take my daily vitamin. I thank God every day for online bill pay and scheduled payments. Without it I’d pay all my shit late because I forget to mail off checks on time.

My plan – accountability.

Within the next few weeks I’m hoping to have a new design up for raych.com. In it, I think I’ll have a section called “last time raych went to the gym” (or something along those lines). It’s a small thing and I’m sure no one gives a flying fuck when was the last time I went to the gym. But I think if I have it posted somewhere that is public like this, it’ll motivate me to keep it current.

[Feel free to harass me via email (raych@raych.com), AIM (raych34), or gchat(raych3481) if it's been too many days since I visited the gym]
